![]() No statesman worth their salt would (or should) allow bands of militarily powerful religious fanatics to be states within his state, after all. The Buddhist militants have been an influential third party force in the nation's politics for decades, if not centuries by that time. He didn't do it out of hatred either his province started small and weak, so he needed to consolidate his power and authority or face annihilation. But at least he had a very reasonable cause to do so. Hiei, as well as persecuting the Ikko Ikki. Nobunaga's worst "crime" (and the most likely source of his present-day infamy) was apparently razing the militant Buddhist sects centered around Mt. It's funny how Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in hindsight, seemed a more capricious and sneakily brutal character than his more infamous master Nobunaga, who was known to refer to himself as a demon king when he was stomping around. Afterwards, if you were born a peasant, you were to die a peasant. he ended the social mobility which allowed him to rise above his peasant beginnings, so that no one could ever follow in his footsteps. There is a huge mound erected in Japan using these ears, and it still exists today. The samurai compromised by taking severed ears back instead. One of the more infamous atrocities committed under Hideyoshi's orders was for samurai to bring him "proof" of conquest by taking the heads of slain Koreans back to Japan. The rationale, besides the fact that Joseon was to serve as a launching pad for an eventual conquest of China, was that without fighting at home, the samurai were getting bored. After pacifying Japan, he launched a bloody invasion of Korea that's still a sore point (among many other things) in Korean-Japanese relations today.Hideyoshi thus had a hand in the deaths of his concubine's mother, father, her brother (Nagamasa's heir and Oichi's only son, whom he beheaded at Oda Nobunaga's orders at a very young age), and step-father, in addition to committimg what was basically statutory rape. After Nagamasa's death at the fall of Odani, Oichi married important Oda retainer Shibata Katsuie, whom Hideyoshi later defeated and forced to commit suicide-which compelled Oichi to follow suit, but not before entrusting Chacha and her sisters to Hideyoshi's care henceforth as his adopted daughter. Said concubine happened to be Lady Chacha, who was the daughter of Azai Nagamasa and Lady Oichi, sister of Hideyoshi's late master Oda Nobunaga. It might have been a bit less amoral for his era's values, but he fathered his legitimate heir with his adopted daughter, who he made his concubine because she looked like the girl's late mother, who it was said he desired deeply. To make matters worse, not only did he kill Toyotomi Hidetsugu, he also killed Hidekatsu's entire family and household, and staked their corpses along a riverbank for all to see. He executed his adopted son (his natural nephew) the moment he got a legitimate heir of his own, under dubious, likely trumped-up charges. We all know he was a truly talented statesman and general, with a rags-to-riches rise to power that's the stuff of legends and soap operas, but he was also an immoral, conniving bastard par excellence.
